What are car insurance groups?
Car insurance groups are broadly set by The Group Rating Panel and administered by Thatcham Research. The groups range from group 1 (the cheapest cars to insure), all the way up to group 50 (the most expensive). Elephant considers these recommendations when calculating our car insurance prices, as well as our own claims experience.
There are thousands of different cars in the UK, which makes working out what they should cost to insure a complex business. To make things easier and fairer the insurance industry uses insurance groups for cars.
To search for which standardised group your car (or a car you're thinking of buying) is in, go to the Association of British Insurer's website. Please note that the group on the ABI website is a guideline only, and the group we use may be different.
